Tinubu Declares Three Days of National Mourning After Military Aircraft Crash Kills 25 in Ondo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning following the death of 25 Nigerian Air Force personnel and passengers in a military aircraft crash in Ondo State.

The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed on Monday in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State, while travelling from Benin City to Lagos on a routine mission. The aircraft disappeared from radar before it was later located close to a naval base in the riverside community. The Nigerian Air Force subsequently confirmed that all 25 people on board died in the crash.

The tragedy has thrown the Nigerian military and the wider country into mourning, with the President directing that national flags be flown at half-mast throughout the country as a mark of respect for the victims.

President Tinubu also ordered the Nigerian Air Force to immediately begin a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The investigation is expected to establish what happened during the aircraft’s final moments and determine the factors that may have contributed to the accident.

According to the Nigerian Air Force, the aircraft was carrying 20 passengers and five crew members when it crashed. The clarification came after an earlier figure of 32 people had been given by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo. Authorities have not immediately explained the discrepancy between the two figures, but the Air Force’s later statement confirmed that 25 people were on board.

The aircraft was reportedly conducting a routine military mission when air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 8:13 a.m. GMT. Search and rescue teams were subsequently mobilised to locate the missing aircraft.

The wreckage was eventually found near Igbokoda, with reports indicating that parts of the aircraft came down close to a river. Local residents who witnessed the incident described hearing a loud sound before the aircraft went down. Emergency personnel and other responders moved into the area to search for the victims and secure the crash site.

The aircraft involved was an ATR-42, a type used by the Nigerian military for several purposes, including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations as well as the transportation of personnel and supplies. Its involvement in the crash has consequently raised questions about the aircraft’s operational condition, maintenance history and the circumstances surrounding the flight.

However, authorities have not yet established the cause of the accident. Until the investigation is completed, it would be premature to attribute the crash to mechanical failure, weather, human error or any other specific factor.

The investigation will likely examine the aircraft’s maintenance records, flight data, communication with air traffic controllers, weather conditions and the activities of the crew before the crash. Investigators may also examine the wreckage for evidence that could help explain what happened.

For the families of the victims, the incident represents a devastating loss. Many of those who died were serving members of the Nigerian Air Force, meaning their deaths have also created a significant loss for the country’s military establishment.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the incident as a deeply painful moment for the Nigerian Air Force and the nation. He also assured the families of those who died that the military would provide support during the difficult period.

The crash has also generated renewed discussion about the safety of Nigeria’s military aviation fleet. The Nigerian armed forces depend heavily on aircraft for operations across the country, including surveillance, transportation, logistics and security missions.

Military aviation can involve demanding operational conditions, making aircraft maintenance, crew training and safety procedures particularly important. The outcome of the investigation will therefore be closely watched, not only to establish responsibility but also to determine whether additional measures are needed to prevent another tragedy.

President Tinubu’s decision to declare three days of national mourning reflects the seriousness with which the Federal Government is treating the incident. During the mourning period, flags are expected to remain at half-mast as the country honours those who lost their lives.

The incident comes at a time when Nigeria’s security forces are playing an increasingly important role in operations across the country. Military aircraft are regularly used to move personnel and equipment and to support security operations in different regions.

The loss of the 25 people therefore goes beyond an aviation accident. It represents the loss of military personnel and other individuals who were travelling on official duty, while also leaving families and colleagues to deal with the consequences of the tragedy.

For now, the focus remains on the investigation and the recovery process. Authorities are expected to provide additional information as investigators establish the sequence of events that led to the crash.

The Federal Government has also appealed for respect and support for the bereaved families as the nation mourns.

As Nigeria observes the three-day national mourning period, attention will remain on the Nigerian Air Force’s investigation and any recommendations that may emerge from it. The ultimate objective, according to the President’s directive, is not only to determine what caused the crash but also to ensure that lessons from the tragedy are used to prevent similar incidents in the future.
