The Social Democratic Party has said the outcome of the Osun State governorship election demonstrates the need for opposition parties to unite behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election. SDP National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, argued that the election showed how a united opposition could challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Gombe said the opposition must learn from Osun and put aside personal ambitions in favour of a broader political alliance. He maintained that the combined strength of opposition parties could present a serious challenge to President Bola Tinubu if they agree on one candidate for the presidential contest.
The comments followed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in Osun, where he defeated APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji by 403,371 votes to 394,684. The result has triggered renewed debate among opposition groups over whether a single candidate would improve their chances of defeating the APC in 2027.
