2027 Elections: Political Parties Demand INEC Explanation Over Missing Candidates

Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 general elections have come under fresh political scrutiny following complaints from several political parties over the omission of their candidates from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) final lists.

The controversy, reported on October 12, 2026, has prompted affected parties to seek clarification from the electoral commission, with some considering legal action to protect their candidates’ participation in the forthcoming elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reportedly begun engaging INEC over the omission of its governorship candidates, including Isa Pantami in Gombe State and Ladi Adebutu in Ogun State. Other parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Action Alliance, have also raised concerns about missing names in different states.

In Kano State, the NDC attributed the omission of its governorship candidate, Aminu Gwarzo, to what it believes may be an administrative error. Meanwhile, the ADC has challenged the exclusion of several candidates in Jigawa State. The reported omissions have raised questions about the process used to compile and publish the final candidate lists.

The reasons behind the cases appear to differ. Some disputes concern party primaries and membership requirements, while others involve alleged errors in submitting candidates’ details. INEC had not publicly confirmed that technical or administrative problems were responsible for the omissions in the report published by Channels Television on October 12.

The development is significant because the final candidate lists determine which aspirants are officially recognised to contest elections. If a candidate is excluded, the affected party may need to seek clarification from the electoral commission or pursue legal action, depending on the circumstances of the case.

The dispute also comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections. With competition expected across several states, the inclusion of candidates on the official lists has become an important issue for party leaders, aspirants and supporters.

The affected parties are seeking explanations and, where necessary, corrections to the published lists. Any changes will depend on the applicable electoral rules, the circumstances of each case and decisions by the relevant authorities or courts.

For voters, the controversy highlights the importance of transparency in the electoral process. Clear explanations from INEC would help candidates and political parties understand the reasons for the omissions while giving voters a better understanding of the options available to them ahead of the elections.

As the situation develops, attention will remain on INEC’s response, possible corrections to the lists and whether affected parties take their complaints to court.
