Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has denied reports that he is lobbying to become Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 election. Wike dismissed the reports as false, saying he has not sought the position and does not need a formal campaign appointment to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. His position was conveyed in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
Wike said his commitment to supporting Tinubu’s second-term bid remains firm, particularly in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory. He reportedly argued that his political influence and ability to mobilise supporters do not depend on holding a campaign position, stressing that he has consistently demonstrated his support for the President through his political activities and public statements. The denial follows reports and calls from some political associates that Wike should be appointed to lead Tinubu’s 2027 presidential campaign because of his political experience and mobilisation capacity.
The former Rivers State governor’s position comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Wike remains a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party while serving in Tinubu’s APC-led administration, a situation that has generated considerable political debate. Despite this, he has continued to publicly support the President and defend some of his administration’s policies. Wike’s latest statement makes clear that, regardless of whether he receives any formal campaign appointment, he intends to remain involved in efforts to secure Tinubu’s re-election.
