Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said he would leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu disrespects the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, describing the bishops as “the conscience of the nation.” Speaking in reaction to the recent meeting between President Tinubu and Catholic bishops, Kalu stressed that the clerics’ advice should be viewed as constructive criticism aimed at improving governance rather than an attack on the administration.

Kalu said the bishops presented an honest assessment of the country’s economic and security challenges, arguing that while politicians may sometimes paint a favourable picture for the President, religious leaders have a duty to speak the truth. He maintained that Nigerians are facing genuine hardship but insisted the situation should not be blamed solely on Tinubu, urging those around the President to carefully reflect on the concerns raised by the bishops.

The former Abia State governor warned that any attempt to disrespect or dismiss the Catholic bishops would be unacceptable, reaffirming his support for their role in promoting accountability and national unity. His comments come amid growing public debate over the bishops’ assessment of the state of the nation and the Presidency’s response to their observations.
