Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has said Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was not allowed to seek a second term because he failed to honour political agreements reached during efforts to resolve the state’s prolonged crisis. Speaking during his monthly media chat, Wike blamed what he described as poor advice from political associates and external interests for the breakdown in their relationship, saying the crisis ultimately cost Fubara the opportunity to pursue re-election.
Wike claimed that, as part of the reconciliation arrangement that ended the impeachment threat and political standoff in Rivers State, Fubara agreed not to contest for a second term. According to him, the governor later attempted to reverse that position by obtaining nomination forms, an action Wike said amounted to a breach of their agreement and contributed to the withdrawal of political support.
The former Rivers governor maintained that the decision was based on political commitments rather than personal differences, insisting that agreements reached during the peace process should have been respected. His remarks come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum, with Rivers State remaining a key battleground.
