Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has appealed to transport unions across the state to stop arbitrary increases in fares, warning that excessive charges place additional pressure on residents already facing rising living costs. Abiodun made the appeal on Thursday in Abeokuta during an event where nine transport unions endorsed the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, ahead of the 2027 election. The governor urged transport operators to balance their need to make profits with their responsibility to provide affordable services to residents.Abiodun said his administration had invested heavily in transportation infrastructure, including the construction and reconstruction of more than 1,700 kilometres of roads, the development of an airport and the implementation of a multimodal transport master plan. He argued that these investments were intended to create better operating conditions for transport businesses and should therefore translate into benefits for commuters. The governor urged operators to use the opportunities created by the government to support economic activity rather than impose sudden fare increases that could make transportation increasingly unaffordable for residents. The appeal comes against the backdrop of longstanding concerns over transport costs, levies and the activities of transport unions in Ogun State. Nine unions, including RTEAN, NURTW, OGSPAM and ACOMORAN, were represented at Thursday’s event, where they collectively endorsed Adeola for the 2027 governorship election. Their state secretary, Tiwalade Akingbade, described the endorsement as historic, while ACOMORAN National President Shamsudeen Apelogun called for greater attention to roads and an efficient transport system. Abiodun, however, maintained that transport operators must put residents’ welfare first and avoid fare increases that unnecessarily worsen the financial burden on commuters.
