At Least 62 Killed as Gunmen Attack Community in Taraba State

At least 62 people have been killed and 52 others injured after gunmen attacked Binnari community in Taraba State, northeastern Nigeria, in a deadly assault that has left residents displaced and triggered emergency response efforts.

According to the Associated Press, the attack occurred on Friday, with the state emergency agency confirming the casualties. Authorities reported that 52 bodies had been recovered, including 15 from the Benue River, while the death toll could increase as search and recovery operations continue.

Police officers remained at the scene to account for additional victims and investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Residents reportedly fled their homes as the gunmen launched the assault. Amnesty International Nigeria said some people escaping the attackers were driven towards the river, where several jumped into the water in an attempt to survive.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of communities in northeastern Nigeria, where armed groups have continued to carry out attacks, kidnappings and other violent activities.

Authorities have not yet provided a complete account of the attack or identified all those responsible. The situation remains under investigation as emergency teams continue their operations.

The attack has also renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of lives.
