Nigeria Reports No Remaining Ebola Cases After Patient Is Evacuated to Switzerland

Nigeria currently has no confirmed Ebola patients remaining in the country after the first confirmed patient in the current outbreak was evacuated to Switzerland for further treatment, according to reports published on October 26.

The patient, a Swiss woman who had been receiving medical care in Abuja, was transferred to Switzerland on Monday after her condition improved. Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Muhammad Ali Pate, said she was stable, conscious and able to communicate before the evacuation.

Her husband, a Swiss diplomat who had also travelled with her, accompanied her on the medical evacuation flight. He had not shown any symptoms, according to the report by the Associated Press.

Health authorities continue to monitor 52 contacts

Although the patient has left Nigeria, health authorities have stressed that the response is not over. The World Health Organization (WHO) says Nigeria is continuing to monitor 52 people who had contact with the patient.

Officials have also warned that the evacuation does not automatically mean the patient is no longer infectious. Medical precautions and contact-tracing measures remain necessary to identify any possible additional infections.

The woman tested positive for Ebola after returning to Abuja from Uganda. As of the latest reports, Nigerian authorities had not established exactly how she contracted the virus.

What this means for Nigerians

The absence of confirmed Ebola patients currently remaining in Nigeria is encouraging news, but it does not mean the outbreak response has ended. Health authorities must continue monitoring exposed individuals and investigating the source of the infection.

Nigerians are advised to follow official guidance from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and seek medical attention if they develop concerning symptoms after a possible exposure.

The situation remains under surveillance, and further updates from health authorities will be important in determining whether additional cases emerge.
