Nigeria and Indonesia Move to Deepen Economic Cooperation as Trade Tops $3bn

Nigeria and Indonesia are seeking to strengthen economic cooperation as bilateral trade between the two countries continues to exceed $3 billion annually.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Bambang Suharto, said both countries have opportunities to expand their relationship beyond existing levels of trade.

The two countries have maintained economic relations across several areas, with opportunities existing in sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, energy, technology and investment.

Indonesia is one of Southeast Asia’s major economies, while Nigeria remains one of Africa’s largest consumer markets and economies.

The push to strengthen the relationship comes as Nigeria continues efforts to diversify its international trading partners and attract foreign investment into domestic industries.

For Indonesia, stronger economic engagement with Nigeria could provide greater access to the West African market, while Nigerian businesses could gain opportunities to access Indonesian consumers and companies.

The two countries are also exploring ways to deepen industrial and technological cooperation.

The Indonesian ambassador’s call comes amid broader efforts by both governments to expand economic ties and increase the value of bilateral trade beyond its current level.

The two sides are expected to continue discussions around investment, trade and industrial cooperation as they seek to translate the existing relationship into more business opportunities.
