Nigeria Set to Launch New Digital Postcode System for Every Building

Nigeria is set to introduce a new national digital postcode system on October 1, 2026, in a move aimed at improving how homes, businesses and other buildings are located across the country.

The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode, being introduced by the Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, will assign an 11-character code to every addressable building in Nigeria.

According to NIPOST, the system is designed to provide a more precise digital address by combining information about the state, local government area, district, area and individual building.

The new system is expected to have applications beyond traditional postal services. It could also support businesses involved in logistics, e-commerce, delivery services, banking, insurance and other sectors that require accurate location information.

For online shoppers and delivery companies, the system could reduce some of the difficulties associated with navigating addresses that rely heavily on landmarks, junctions and verbal directions.

NIPOST says users will be able to search for, save and share their digital postcode through its dedicated platform and mobile application.

The organisation has described the initiative as a building-level addressing system designed to make locations easier to find, share and use.

The nationwide launch is scheduled for October 1, making the digital postcode system one of the latest efforts to modernise Nigeria’s addressing infrastructure and make physical locations easier to connect with digital services.
