The notice reportedly circulated online and was presented as an official communication from the financial technology company, potentially creating confusion among customers and the wider public.
According to reports, the arrest was made following an investigation by the NPF National Cybercrime Centre into the circulation of the false information.
The incident highlights the growing concern over the spread of fabricated information involving financial institutions and digital payment platforms, particularly as millions of Nigerians rely on fintech applications for transfers, payments and other everyday transactions.
Authorities have continued to warn members of the public against creating or circulating false information online, especially content capable of causing panic or affecting confidence in financial services.
Users of digital payment platforms are also advised to verify major announcements through the companies’ official communication channels before sharing them.
The police investigation into the fake OPay notice is expected to determine how the false information was created and circulated.
