The Federal Government is preparing to expand the use of the 112 emergency number nationwide as part of efforts to improve how Nigerians access emergency services and receive faster assistance during crises.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the country’s emergency response system by providing members of the public with a single number they can use to request urgent help from relevant authorities.
According to the Nigeria Television Authority, the government is targeting a nationwide rollout of the 112 emergency line, with the aim of improving coordination and reducing delays when emergencies are reported.
The number is intended to serve as an important link between members of the public and emergency response agencies, including the police, fire services, medical responders and other relevant authorities.
For many Nigerians, one of the major challenges during emergencies has been knowing which agency to contact and getting through quickly. A more coordinated emergency number could help simplify that process, particularly when a situation requires more than one response agency.
The government’s plan comes as Nigeria continues to deal with emergencies ranging from road crashes and building collapses to fires, medical emergencies and other incidents requiring immediate intervention.
A nationwide system would also require effective coordination between federal and state authorities, emergency call centres and the agencies responsible for responding to incidents. The success of the initiative will therefore depend not only on making the number available but also on ensuring that calls are answered promptly and that emergency teams can respond effectively.
The rollout is expected to form part of broader efforts to improve Nigeria’s emergency management system and provide citizens with a more reliable channel for seeking help when lives and property are at risk.
