At least nine people have been killed in a fresh wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine, as the war continues to intensify and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy steps up diplomatic efforts to secure additional support for his country.
The overnight attacks targeted several areas, including warehouses and ports, with Ukrainian officials reporting casualties in the Sumy region and the Black Sea port city of Mykolaiv. Five people were reported killed and 24 injured in Sumy, while another four people were killed and 19 injured in Mykolaiv.
The latest strikes come as Zelenskyy continues an international diplomatic tour focused on strengthening Ukraine’s air-defence capabilities and preparing for the coming winter. Ukrainian authorities say protecting critical infrastructure remains a major priority as Russia continues its attacks.
Zelenskyy also said Ukrainian forces had carried out strikes against Russian infrastructure supporting Moscow’s war effort, including an oil refinery in the Yamalo-Nenets region and a seaport in Dagestan. He described the strikes as a response to Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine.
The conflict is also creating growing concern across Europe. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Russia’s actions have strengthened the case for European countries to increase defence spending and take greater responsibility for their security.3T5R
European governments have become increasingly concerned about both conventional military attacks and possible attempts to disrupt critical infrastructure. NATO recently said it had thwarted an alleged Russian operation targeting undersea cables linking Svalbard and Norway.
The latest escalation highlights the wider security challenges created by the war, which has now extended beyond the immediate battlefield through attacks on infrastructure, energy facilities and strategic transport routes.
With winter approaching, Ukraine is expected to place even greater emphasis on protecting its energy infrastructure and securing additional air-defence equipment from its international partners.
