Nigerian-American poet Daniel Umemezie has been selected as the 2026–2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate, becoming the 10th young person to hold the prestigious title and the second Nigerian-American recipient. The U.S. Mission Nigeria said his poetry explores heritage, identity and the complexities of growing up between Nigerian and American cultures.
The 18-year-old grew up in Nigeria before moving to the United States with his family at age 13 after his mother secured a nursing job there. His early interest in music and the arts included playing nine instruments, alongside drawing, painting and other creative pursuits. Poetry later became an important way for him to express and reconcile his experiences across both cultures.
Umemezie was selected in April from hundreds of young writers and local youth poets across the US. Before earning the national honour, he became the Cedar Valley Youth Poet Laureate and Iowa Student Poet Ambassador. He is expected to travel across the United States for poetry readings and workshops, while championing social justice, political participation and self-exploration. He plans to study aerospace engineering at Iowa State University.
