FG Approves ₦70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance for Nigerian Workers

The Federal Government has approved a ₦70,000 monthly transport support allowance for public service workers for six months, beginning in November 2026, following discussions with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The decision was reached during a conciliation meeting between government representatives and organised labour in Abuja on Tuesday, October 27, as both sides continued discussions over workers’ welfare and the rising cost of living.

According to reports, the temporary intervention is intended to provide financial relief to workers struggling with transportation expenses and other economic pressures.

The government also approved the payment of outstanding peculiar allowances dating from May 1, 2026. The arrears are expected to be paid in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.

However, discussions over the implementation of a new minimum wage arrangement remain unresolved. The government and organised labour are expected to continue negotiations through a committee established to address outstanding wage-related issues.

The transport allowance comes amid growing concerns about the cost of living in Nigeria, particularly the impact of transportation, food and other essential expenses on workers’ monthly earnings.

While the intervention offers temporary support, its implementation and the outcome of ongoing wage negotiations will determine how much additional relief workers receive in the coming months.

The Federal Government and labour representatives are expected to continue discussions as they work towards resolving outstanding issues affecting public sector employees.
