One person has been killed and seven others injured after gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying traders returning from the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 4, 2026, as the traders were travelling towards Bassa Local Government Area after leaving the market. Reports place the attack around the Bukuru area, near the Total Filling Station at Yelwa Club Junction.
The victims were reportedly travelling in a commercial vehicle when the attackers opened fire. Musa Abubakar was identified in reports as the person who died in the attack, while seven other passengers sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) confirmed the attack and condemned it, describing it as another incident involving traders returning from their lawful business activities.
MACBAN Chairman Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo called on the police, Operation Safe Haven, the Department of State Services and other security agencies to investigate the attack, identify those responsible and strengthen security along the route connecting the Kara Bukuru market with surrounding communities.
The association also appealed for calm and urged its members not to retaliate, stressing the need for the incident to be handled through lawful means.
The latest attack has renewed concerns about the safety of traders and herders travelling to and from the Kara Bukuru livestock market. MACBAN recalled that five herders were reportedly killed on September 20 while travelling from the same market, highlighting continuing security concerns along the route.
As of the latest reports on Monday, the identity and motive of the attackers had not been established, and no arrests had been publicly announced. The incident remains under investigation.
