Nigeria’s Domestic Gas Supply Crosses 2 Billion Cubic Feet Per Day

Nigeria’s domestic gas supply has surpassed 2 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d), marking a significant development in the country’s efforts to increase gas availability for electricity generation, industries and other domestic users.

The Minister of State for Gas, according to a report by Reuters, disclosed the milestone as the Federal Government continues to push for higher domestic gas production and improved infrastructure across the sector.

The increase comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to use its large natural gas reserves to address persistent energy challenges and support economic activity. Gas remains an important source of fuel for many of the country’s power plants, while manufacturers and other industries also depend on reliable gas supplies for their operations.

The government has been working to expand gas infrastructure and improve the connection between gas producers and domestic consumers. Increased supply is expected to help reduce some of the constraints faced by power generators and industrial users, although the government still faces challenges around infrastructure, financing, pricing and the reliability of gas delivery.

The latest milestone also forms part of broader efforts to make greater use of Nigeria’s gas resources domestically rather than relying heavily on exports. Officials have said that increasing gas availability to power plants and industries could support economic growth by improving electricity generation and strengthening industrial production.

The government is also looking to attract additional investment into the gas sector as it seeks further increases in domestic supply.

With domestic gas supply now above 2 billion cubic feet per day, authorities are expected to focus on sustaining the growth and ensuring that increased production translates into more reliable energy for businesses, industries and households across Nigeria.
