Presidency Calls for Wider Adoption of Electric Vehicles Across Nigeria

The Presidency has called for the nationwide expansion of electric vehicle initiatives, saying greater adoption of cleaner transportation can help modernise Nigeria’s transport system and attract more private-sector investment.

The call was made as the Federal Government continues to explore alternatives that can reduce dependence on conventional petrol-powered transportation and support the development of a more sustainable mobility system.

Electric vehicles have attracted increasing attention in Nigeria as the country deals with high transportation costs, fuel-price pressures and the need to develop more efficient energy solutions. Government officials and private-sector operators have been exploring electric buses, cars and other forms of electric mobility, although challenges remain around charging infrastructure, electricity supply, vehicle costs and maintenance.

The Presidency’s latest position is expected to encourage more investment in the sector, particularly in the development of charging stations and other infrastructure required to support electric vehicles on a larger scale.

For commuters, the expansion of electric transportation could eventually introduce more options for public and private mobility. However, the extent to which electric vehicles can become widely accessible will depend on factors including the availability and reliability of electricity, the cost of vehicles and the development of a nationwide charging network.

The government has also continued to promote alternative energy and cleaner transportation initiatives as part of broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s economy.

The latest call comes as several states and private companies begin experimenting with electric and compressed-natural-gas transportation, creating a growing alternative-fuel market in the country.
