NLNG Plans 50% Increase in Cooking Gas Production

The Nigeria LNG Limited is planning to increase its cooking gas production by 50 per cent as the company responds to growing domestic demand for liquefied petroleum gas.

The increase is expected to contribute to efforts to improve the availability of cooking gas in the Nigerian market.

Cooking gas prices have remained an important issue for households, particularly as Nigerians continue to search for alternatives to traditional cooking fuels.

The planned increase in production comes alongside other developments in Nigeria’s gas sector, including new investments in LPG storage and distribution infrastructure.

One of the projects currently being developed is a 5,000-metric-tonne LPG terminal in Ijora, Lagos, which recently reached mechanical completion. The project is expected to begin receiving its first gas in November.

The facility is also expected to support efforts to increase LPG availability and potentially improve access to cooking gas through additional supply and blending activities.

The Federal Government has continued to promote gas as an important part of Nigeria’s energy transition, particularly because of the country’s large natural gas reserves.

Industry stakeholders, however, continue to emphasise the importance of adequate infrastructure, reliable supply and efficient distribution if increased production is to translate into more affordable and accessible cooking gas for households.
