Identical Nigerian twins, Hussaini and Hassan Malami, have both secured employment with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited as members of the NNPC Tigers Class of 2026, despite initially having doubts about whether they could both be recruited. Hussaini, who had always wanted to work with NNPC, applied when recruitment opened and encouraged his twin brother Hassan to do the same. Hassan was initially reluctant because he believed NNPC might recruit only one person from a family and did not want his application to affect his brother’s chances. He was also working in the banking sector and had aspirations of joining the Nigerian Air Force. However, persistent encouragement from his brother eventually convinced him to apply before the deadline.
The brothers went through the recruitment process independently, taking the computer-based test on the same day but at different locations, with Hussaini sitting for his examination in Sokoto and Hassan in Kaduna. After completing the subsequent stages, including interviews, both received employment letters on the same day. Hussaini discovered his offer after midnight and was eager to wake his family with the news, while Hassan learnt about his own success through their family WhatsApp group the following morning. Hussaini has since joined NNPC Exploration & Production Limited, while Hassan, a civil engineer, joined the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, where he has gained exposure to the country’s gas transportation and infrastructure business.
The twins said their experience has changed their perception of the recruitment process and encouraged other young Nigerians to ignore rumours that personal connections are required to secure employment at NNPC. Hassan described his new position as another form of national service, even though he still hopes to explore a career in the military before reaching the age limit in 2030. Hussaini, meanwhile, said his role has strengthened his desire to contribute to Nigeria’s energy sector and eventually share his practical industry experience with university students. The brothers urged prospective applicants to take advantage of legitimate recruitment opportunities, apply when vacancies are announced and trust their abilities rather than assuming that connections are necessary.
