About 78 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government have earmarked nearly ₦400 billion in the 2026 budget for projects including the construction and renovation of mosques, traditional rulers’ palaces, community halls, village market squares, civic centres, and other constituency-related initiatives. The allocations also cover items such as motorcycles, tricycles, market stalls, mini-stadia, museums, and community support programmes, raising questions over spending priorities.
According to the budget analysis, more than half of the allocations are for projects considered non-developmental, including over ₦4 billion for the renovation of mosques in Kebbi, Ekiti, and Jigawa states, alongside other community infrastructure projects. Public finance analysts have argued that many of the projects fall outside the statutory responsibilities of the agencies implementing them, raising concerns about accountability, transparency, and value for public funds.
The revelations have intensified scrutiny of the 2026 budget, with critics urging the Federal Government to prioritise investments in sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and economic development. They also called for stricter oversight to ensure budget allocations align with the constitutional mandates of government agencies.
