The Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged Nigeria to remain committed to its ongoing economic reforms while exercising caution in borrowing and debt management. Speaking at the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja, she stressed that sustaining reforms is essential for long-term economic stability and inclusive growth.
Okonjo-Iweala noted that while recent reforms are beginning to yield positive results, the government must ensure that their benefits are felt by ordinary Nigerians through increased job creation, improved living standards, and expanded economic opportunities, particularly for the country’s growing youth population. She also advised policymakers to avoid excessive debt accumulation and focus on maintaining fiscal discipline.
She made the remarks during a fireside discussion with Olayemi Cardoso, where both leaders highlighted the importance of policy consistency, sound macroeconomic management, and structural reforms to strengthen investor confidence and support Nigeria’s long-term economic development.
