Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, plans to donate one-third of his wealth to charitable causes as part of his long-term succession strategy, according to his daughter, Halima Dangote. Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, Halima, who serves as a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, said the billionaire has secured the support of his family to dedicate 33 percent of his estate to philanthropy. Based on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimate of $35.1 billion, the planned donation would be worth approximately $11.7 billion at current valuations.
Halima said philanthropy has always been central to the Dangote family’s values, noting that the planned donation will help expand the foundation’s work in healthcare, education, nutrition and economic empowerment across Africa. She described giving back as an integral part of her father’s legacy and said the succession plan is designed to ensure the family’s charitable mission continues for generations.
The announcement would rank among the largest philanthropic commitments ever made by an African billionaire. Through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, the business magnate has already funded numerous initiatives, including interventions in health, education, disaster relief and poverty reduction, with the latest pledge reinforcing his commitment to using his wealth to address major social and economic challenges across the continent.
