Peter Obi Speaks Out After Attack on His Convoy in Calabar as Police Arrest Suspect

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned an attack on his convoy and supporters in Calabar, Cross River State, following a violent incident that occurred during his visit to the state.

Obi was in Calabar alongside his wife, Margaret, and his political associate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, for a town hall meeting when the incident reportedly occurred.

According to reports, a group of suspected attackers confronted members of his entourage, throwing stones at supporters and causing tension around the gathering.

Speaking after the incident, Obi disclosed that his security personnel had informed him that some of the attackers were carrying machetes and other weapons. He was reportedly advised to use another route for safety.

The former Anambra State governor expressed concern over the development, particularly the safety of citizens participating in political activities.

The incident has attracted attention because it comes as political activities and preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.

Police authorities have reportedly arrested one suspect in connection with the attack, although further investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify others who may have been involved.

The development has renewed concerns about political violence, freedom of movement and the safety of political supporters ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi’s supporters and other Nigerians have called for a thorough investigation and appropriate action against anyone found responsible.

Political observers say incidents of intimidation and violence could undermine public confidence in the electoral process if they are not properly addressed.

The police are expected to provide further information as investigations continue.
