Nigerian Government Investigates Deaths of 37 Miners in Detention

The Nigerian government is facing renewed calls for accountability following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who reportedly died while being detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

A government investigation found that the detainees died from overcrowding, poor ventilation, extreme heat, dehydration and neglect.

The victims included teenagers who had been arrested over suspected illegal mining activities in Niger State.

According to the investigation, the detainees were kept in overcrowded conditions, with inadequate ventilation and limited access to essential care.

The committee described the deaths as preventable and rejected earlier claims that a disease outbreak was responsible.

The findings have raised concerns about the treatment of suspects in detention and the responsibility of security agencies to protect individuals in their custody.

The investigative panel recommended compensation of ₦30 million for each victim’s family and ₦10 million for each of 41 survivors.

It also called for major changes within the NSCDC, including the overhaul of its leadership. Some senior officials have reportedly been suspended pending further investigation.

Families of the deceased are demanding justice, while survivors have called for officers responsible for the conditions to face consequences.

The government has referred the report for further legal action.
