Boat operators in Lagos State have called on the government to provide more jetties, subsidies and financial support to strengthen water transportation across the state.
The operators said improved infrastructure and access to funding would help them expand services, improve passenger safety and reduce the pressure on road transportation.
They explained that water transportation has significant potential to ease traffic congestion in Lagos, particularly for residents travelling between communities separated by waterways.
However, inadequate landing facilities, high operating costs and limited access to affordable financing remain major challenges facing operators.
The operators are asking the government to invest in additional jetties and provide financial incentives that would make ferry operations more sustainable.
They also believe improved government support could encourage more private-sector investment in the industry, create employment opportunities and provide commuters with alternative transportation options.
The call comes as Lagos continues to explore water transportation as part of its wider urban mobility strategy.
