The Federal Government has directed Nigeria’s federal universities to reduce their dependence on government allocations and develop alternative sources of funding to support their operations.
The Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, gave the directive while calling on university managements to explore sustainable ways of generating additional revenue without compromising their core academic responsibilities.
According to the minister, universities need to become more financially independent as government resources remain limited and the demand for quality higher education continues to increase.
The directive is expected to encourage institutions to look beyond traditional government funding and develop partnerships with the private sector, alumni, research organisations and other stakeholders.
Universities could also increase revenue through research and innovation, professional training programmes, consultancy services, technology commercialisation and other activities that are connected to their academic expertise.
The move comes amid ongoing concerns about funding in Nigeria’s tertiary education system. Universities require significant resources to maintain laboratories, libraries, hostels, lecture facilities and other infrastructure, while also meeting the needs of students and academic staff.
However, the call for alternative funding is likely to generate debate among stakeholders, particularly over how universities can raise additional revenue without placing an excessive financial burden on students.
The Federal Government’s position is that stronger internally generated revenue and external partnerships can help universities improve their financial stability and provide better learning and research facilities.
The development could therefore push Nigerian universities to become more entrepreneurial and strengthen their links with industries, particularly in areas such as technology, research, agriculture, healthcare and innovation.
The government is expected to continue engaging university authorities on strategies that can improve funding while maintaining access to affordable higher education for Nigerians.
