NAFDAC Uncovers Lagos Building Used to Store Bottles for Fake Alcohol Production

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a residential building in Lagos State allegedly being used to store empty bottles intended for the production of counterfeit alcoholic beverages.

The discovery was made during an enforcement operation conducted by the agency as part of its efforts to tackle the circulation of fake and potentially dangerous alcoholic drinks in the country.

According to reports, NAFDAC discovered more than 100 sacks of empty bottles inside the building. The bottles were suspected to have been gathered for use in the production and distribution of counterfeit alcoholic beverages.

The operation also resulted in the agency identifying materials and activities associated with the suspected illegal business.

Investigation into suspected counterfeit alcohol

NAFDAC has continued to intensify its monitoring of businesses involved in the production, storage and distribution of alcoholic beverages across Nigeria.

Counterfeit alcoholic drinks remain a major concern for public health authorities because products manufactured outside approved standards may contain unsafe ingredients or incorrect alcohol concentrations.

The use of empty bottles collected from different sources can also make it difficult for consumers to distinguish genuine products from counterfeit ones, particularly when fake manufacturers attempt to reproduce the packaging of established brands.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that consuming unregulated alcoholic beverages can expose individuals to serious health risks.

The Lagos discovery has therefore raised fresh concerns about the methods allegedly used by illegal operators to prepare counterfeit products for the market.

NAFDAC intensifies enforcement

The agency has been conducting enforcement operations targeting suspected illegal manufacturers, distributors and storage facilities.

Such operations are intended to prevent unregistered and potentially harmful products from reaching consumers.

NAFDAC’s responsibilities include regulating food, drugs, cosmetics and other products under its supervision, while ensuring that manufacturers comply with applicable safety and registration requirements.

The discovery in Lagos highlights the importance of inspecting storage facilities and investigating suspicious commercial activities that could be connected to the production of counterfeit goods.

The agency’s investigation is expected to establish the ownership of the building, the intended use of the bottles and whether any counterfeit alcoholic beverages had already been produced or distributed.

What consumers should know

Consumers are advised to purchase alcoholic beverages from reputable outlets and pay attention to product packaging, registration details and signs of tampering.

Suspiciously packaged drinks, products with damaged seals or beverages sold under questionable circumstances should be avoided.

The discovery also serves as a reminder that counterfeit products can enter the market through different stages of the supply chain, making enforcement and public awareness important in protecting consumers.

NAFDAC’s latest operation forms part of the broader effort to prevent illegal manufacturers from using residential and commercial premises to store materials intended for the production of unregulated alcoholic beverages.
