Israel Marks October 7 Anniversary Amid Mourning, Gaza War and Election Tensions

Israel has marked the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack with memorial ceremonies, moments of silence and tributes to those killed during the assault. Families gathered at locations including the site of the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed, to remember victims of the deadliest attack in Israel’s history. The assault killed about 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken to Gaza, according to Israeli authorities. The anniversary has also highlighted the continuing consequences of the conflict that followed the attack. Despite a ceasefire that has been in place for about a year, violence has continued, with Israel carrying out fresh strikes in Gaza as commemorations took place. Palestinian health authorities say more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, while much of Gaza remains devastated and millions of residents continue to face severe humanitarian conditions.October 7 is also shaping Israel’s political landscape as the country prepares for its first national election since the attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces criticism over the security failures that preceded the assault, while opposition figures and victims’ families are demanding an independent investigation into what went wrong. Polling indicates that the events of October 7 remain a major factor in how many Israelis intend to vote, making the anniversary both a day of national mourning and a significant political issue ahead of the election.
