Nigeria and Australia are strengthening cooperation in the mining sector as both countries advance the third phase of the Nigeria–Australia Resource Industry Collaboration and Capacity Building Programme.
The initiative is designed to improve technical expertise within Nigeria’s mining industry while promoting practical knowledge transfer, stronger industry participation and the development of skilled professionals who can contribute to the country’s mineral resources sector.
The latest phase is expected to move beyond conventional professional training, with greater emphasis on practical industry exposure and knowledge that can be applied directly to mining operations in Nigeria. The programme builds on earlier phases of collaboration between Nigerian institutions and Australian partners.
The renewed cooperation comes as Nigeria continues efforts to diversify its economy away from oil by developing its solid minerals sector. The Federal Government has identified mining as an important area for attracting investment, creating jobs and increasing local value addition.
The partnership with Australia is expected to support Nigeria’s efforts to build the technical capacity required to explore, process and manage its mineral resources more effectively.
Industry stakeholders have increasingly stressed the need for Nigeria to move beyond exporting raw minerals and develop stronger domestic processing capabilities. The collaboration is therefore being positioned as part of a broader push to build a more skilled and competitive mining industry.
Nigeria is also preparing for Nigeria Mining Week in Abuja in October, where investment, mineral development and the future of the country’s mining sector will be major areas of focus.
