The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unanimously reaffirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino after world football’s governing body apologised over governance shortcomings linked to the abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal. During a meeting of its Executive Committee in Rabat, Morocco, CAF welcomed FIFA’s acknowledgement that mistakes were made in handling the proposed commercial venture and endorsed the organisation’s commitment to improving transparency and governance. The African football body also reiterated its confidence in Infantino’s leadership despite growing criticism from some football stakeholders in other regions.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said FIFA had played a vital role in the development of football across Africa through increased investment in infrastructure, competitions and grassroots programmes. The Executive Committee thanked Infantino, FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafström and the FIFA administration for their continued support of African football, while backing the planned review of governance processes surrounding the shelved FFE project. The continental body also stressed the importance of accountability, transparency and due process in the administration of global football.
CAF’s endorsement comes at a time when FIFA is facing mounting pressure from some football federations, particularly in Europe, over the handling of the proposed investment plan. While UEFA and several other stakeholders have maintained their criticism and questioned Infantino’s leadership, CAF has positioned itself firmly behind the FIFA president, highlighting the progress made under his administration and expressing support for his prospective re-election bid in 2027. The latest development underscores the deep divisions within global football governance as debates over transparency and the future direction of FIFA continue.
