Defending champions Nigeria begin their quest for a record-extending 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with an opening Group C clash against tournament debutants Malawi. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade leads the Super Falcons, while head coach Justine Madugu has urged his players not to underestimate their opponents despite Nigeria’s rich history in the competition.
Ajibade said the team’s priority is to secure all three points rather than focus on style, stressing that every match in the tournament is important. The starting lineup includes Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal, with experienced stars such as Michelle Alozie, Ashleigh Plumptre, Esther Okoronkwo, and Asisat Oshoala expected to play key roles as the Falcons begin their title defence.
Nigeria enter the tournament as favourites after winning the last edition and are aiming to extend their record as Africa’s most successful women’s national team. Victory over Malawi would provide the perfect start to their campaign as they seek another continental crown and qualification for the knockout stages.
