A suspect has reportedly confessed to stealing cash belonging to several Super Falcons players at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, just days before Nigeria’s opening match at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The suspect has been arrested, is expected to return the stolen money, and will face criminal prosecution as investigations continue.
The theft occurred during the team’s final day in Casablanca before they relocated to Rabat for the tournament. Midfielder Esther Okoronkwo disclosed that she, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade were among the players who had cash stolen from their hotel rooms. Okoronkwo also criticised the hotel’s handling of the incident, claiming more than $1,000 was stolen and that staff responded disrespectfully to the players’ complaints.
Former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh later confirmed that a breakthrough had been made, announcing that the suspect had confessed and that full restitution would be made to the affected players while legal proceedings take their course. Despite the incident, the Super Falcons have shifted their focus to the WAFCON, where they are aiming to win a record-extending 11th African title.
