France have failed in their bid to overturn the yellow card shown to winger Michael Olise during their World Cup Round of 16 victory over Paraguay, with FIFA rejecting the appeal. France coach Didier Deschamps confirmed that the governing body upheld the booking, despite French officials arguing that television replays showed there was little or no contact between Olise and Paraguay’s Matías Galarza during the incident that led to the caution.
The decision means Olise remains one booking away from suspension. If the Bayern Munich star receives another yellow card in France’s quarter-final against Morocco, he will miss a potential semi-final. Midfielder Manu Koné and forward Bradley Barcola, who were also booked against Paraguay, are in the same disciplinary situation. Deschamps also provided a positive update on midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, saying he is recovering from a thigh injury and could return to training before the match.
France’s appeal came amid heightened scrutiny of FIFA’s disciplinary decisions following the suspension reversal granted to Folarin Balogun earlier in the tournament. However, FIFA chose to uphold Olise’s booking, leaving the French playmaker at risk of missing the next round should Les Bleus progress with another caution against Morocco.
