Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, receiving their membership cards in Abuja in what marks a significant realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. The development was captured in a widely circulated video showing both leaders being officially registered into the party.

The two opposition figures, who were presidential candidates in the 2023 elections under different parties, completed their move after a closed-door meeting with NDC leaders at the residence of former Bayelsa State governor Seriake Dickson. During the event, Kwankwaso was first presented with his membership card, followed by Obi, signaling their formal entry into the party structure.

Their defection is part of a broader wave of political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition space, driven largely by internal crises in parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and ongoing coalition talks. Analysts say the move could reshape alliances and strengthen efforts to build a united front capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027.
