Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed a £746 million export finance agreement to redevelop the Apapa Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, marking a major boost for the country’s maritime infrastructure. The deal was finalised during a bilateral meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London as part of Tinubu’s state visit.

The financing, backed by UK Export Finance and coordinated by Citibank, will fund the modernisation and rehabilitation of the two busiest seaports in Nigeria, which together handle over 70% of the nation’s import and export trade. The upgrade is expected to introduce modern equipment, digital cargo systems, and automated processes, significantly reducing congestion, improving cargo clearance time, and boosting efficiency.

Officials say the project will strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading maritime hub in West and Central Africa, while also deepening economic ties between both countries. The redevelopment is expected to lower logistics costs, improve transparency in port operations, and create new commercial opportunities for both Nigerian and British businesses.
