Suspected terrorists believed to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have attacked two Nigerian military bases located in Goniri and Kukawa, according to security sources. The coordinated assaults were reportedly launched overnight, targeting the military formations and triggering intense gun battles between the attackers and Nigerian troops. Initial reports indicate that a commanding officer and several soldiers were killed during the attacks. 
The attacks are part of a continuing wave of insurgent violence in northeastern Nigeria, where militant groups linked to the Islamic State have maintained a strong presence. Security analysts say the assaults on military facilities demonstrate the insurgents’ ongoing capacity to organise coordinated operations against security forces despite years of counter-terrorism campaigns by the Nigerian military.
