\n\nThe Nigeria Police Council has unanimously confirmed Olatunji “Tunji” Disu as the 23rd substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) during a high-level meeting at the State House in Abuja, presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The council’s endorsement in line with provisions of the Police Act 2020 finalises Disu’s transition from acting IGP, a role he assumed on February 24 following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu, a seasoned police officer with decades of leadership experience across key units such as the Rapid Response Squad and Special Protection Unit, is expected to be formally sworn in later this week. His confirmation follows calls from both security analysts and civil society groups for strong, reform-focused leadership amid rising national security challenges. Prior to his appointment, the International Press Institute Nigeria urged the new IGP to safeguard press freedom and uphold democratic rights as part of broader police reforms.
