\n\nToxic Gas Leak at Nigerian Mine Kills 37, Hospitalizes 26
A toxic gas leak at a mine in north-central Nigeria has resulted in the deaths of 37 people, with another 26 hospitalized, police confirmed on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning in the Kampani Zurak community, located in Plateau State’s Wase area. According to police spokesman Alfred Alabo, preliminary investigations suggest the victims were exposed to a sudden discharge of lead oxide and other hazardous gases, including sulfur and carbon monoxide.
“These substances are toxic and poisonous to humans, particularly in confined or poorly ventilated spaces,” Alabo said in a statement. The deceased have been handed over to their families for burial in accordance with religious customs.
Authorities have since sealed the mining site, and a formal investigation is underway. Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, noted that the miners were unaware of the toxic emissions and continued working under normal conditions.
It remains unclear what was being mined at the site or whether operations were authorized. The tragedy underscores ongoing concerns over illegal mining activities across Nigeria, which have claimed hundreds of lives in recent years.
