Militants Attack Shell’s Bonga Offshore Oil Facility, Disrupting Nigerian Oil Production

Nigeria’s oil industry has come under renewed pressure following an attack by militants on Shell’s Bonga offshore oil facility, one of the country’s major deepwater oil production installations.

According to a Reuters report published on October 31, militants travelling in speedboats attacked the offshore facility on Thursday, October 29. The incident reportedly disrupted operations and reduced Nigeria’s oil output by approximately 10 per cent.

The Bonga field, operated by Shell, is located offshore in the Gulf of Guinea and is an important contributor to Nigeria’s crude oil production. The facility uses a floating production, storage and offloading vessel to process and store crude oil before it is transported to international markets.

The attack has raised fresh concerns about the security of Nigeria’s offshore energy infrastructure, particularly as the country continues efforts to increase oil production and attract investment into its petroleum sector.

Nigeria relies heavily on crude oil exports for foreign exchange earnings and government revenue. Any significant disruption to production can therefore affect national income, export earnings and the government’s ability to meet its financial obligations.

The incident also comes at a sensitive time for the global oil market, where supply disruptions can influence international crude prices.

The Nigerian Navy reportedly confirmed that the American captain of an oil supply vessel was kidnapped by gunmen shortly after the attack on the offshore facility.

The incident highlights the continuing security risks faced by vessels and workers operating in Nigerian waters.

Authorities and security agencies are expected to investigate the attack and strengthen protection around offshore oil installations.

The development could also raise concerns among international oil companies operating in the country, particularly over the safety of offshore personnel and the reliability of production infrastructure.

Nigeria has spent years attempting to improve crude oil production following previous disruptions caused by theft, pipeline vandalism and attacks on energy infrastructure.

The latest incident presents another challenge to those efforts.
