Nigeria Confirms Ebola Case in Abuja as Health Authorities Trace 44 Contacts

Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja after a woman with a recent travel history to Uganda tested positive for the virus, prompting health authorities to begin contact tracing and strengthen efforts to prevent further transmission.

According to reports published on October 21, 2026, Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate confirmed that the patient was receiving medical care in isolation. Authorities have identified 44 people who may have come into contact with her and are working to establish whether anyone else could have been exposed.

The woman reportedly began showing symptoms on October 7 and was admitted to a private hospital in Abuja on October 11. Her diagnosis was confirmed after laboratory testing. The precise location where she contracted the infection has not been established publicly, and health officials are investigating her travel and exposure history.

What does this mean for Nigerians?

Ebola is a serious infectious disease that can cause fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, internal or external bleeding. It spreads through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is showing symptoms, or through contaminated materials.

Health authorities are focusing on identifying people who may have been exposed, monitoring their health and ensuring that anyone who develops symptoms receives prompt medical attention. Contact tracing is important because it helps officials identify possible infections early and limit further spread.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention had already strengthened its preparedness measures following the wider outbreak in parts of Africa. These measures include surveillance, laboratory testing, isolation arrangements and infection prevention in healthcare facilities.

What should the public do?

Nigerians are encouraged to maintain good hygiene, avoid direct contact with the bodily fluids of anyone suspected of having Ebola, and seek medical advice if they develop concerning symptoms after a possible exposure. Anyone worried about a possible exposure should contact health professionals rather than attempt to manage the situation alone.

The confirmation of this case does not mean that there is a nationwide outbreak. However, it makes rapid detection, accurate public information and cooperation with health officials especially important.

Authorities will need to continue monitoring identified contacts and provide reliable updates as the investigation progresses.
