TotalEnergies, AMNI Approve $800m Ima Gas Project

TotalEnergies and Nigerian independent energy company AMNI International have taken a Final Investment Decision (FID) on the $800 million Ima Gas Project, marking a major step toward developing the long-delayed gas project.

The decision was announced in Abuja on Wednesday during the FID signing ceremony, with the project described as an important addition to Nigeria’s efforts to expand domestic gas production and strengthen investment in the energy sector.

The Ima Gas Project has reportedly remained undeveloped for more than 50 years. Its approval now moves the project from the planning and investment stage toward actual development and production.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, used the occasion to call on oil and gas companies operating in Nigeria to speed up their investment decisions. He said Nigeria needs to reduce the time between discovering resources and bringing them into production.

The project is expected to contribute to Nigeria’s gas supply while also creating opportunities for local participation, employment and investment across the oil and gas value chain.

The development comes as the Federal Government continues to position natural gas as an important part of Nigeria’s energy strategy. Gas is expected to support electricity generation, industrial activity and domestic energy consumption while also providing an opportunity for Nigeria to increase its energy exports.

The $800 million investment also signals continued interest from international and local energy companies in Nigeria’s upstream sector as authorities push for faster project development and increased production.
