The Federal Government has ruled out an increase in electricity tariffs, saying its immediate focus is on improving power supply and implementing reforms across Nigeria’s electricity sector.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the government is concentrating on measures that will improve electricity generation, transmission and distribution rather than increasing the financial burden on consumers.
The decision comes as electricity supply remains a major concern for households and businesses across the country. Reliable power has continued to be a key issue for manufacturers, small businesses and other electricity consumers who often rely on alternative sources of energy when grid supply is inadequate.
The government’s position also comes amid ongoing efforts to address structural challenges within the power sector, including inadequate infrastructure, gas supply constraints and financial difficulties affecting electricity distribution companies.
Officials have continued to emphasise the need for reforms that can attract investment into the sector while improving the reliability of electricity delivered to consumers.
For businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, developments in the power sector remain significant because electricity costs and availability directly affect operating expenses, production and service delivery.
The Federal Government is therefore expected to focus on improving the efficiency of the electricity value chain while maintaining its position against an immediate tariff increase.
The latest position provides some relief for electricity consumers who have been dealing with rising operating costs, although the impact will ultimately depend on whether the planned reforms lead to measurable improvements in power supply.
