President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Government to move Nigeria’s Digital Free Zones initiative into its implementation phase, with the programme designed to attract global technology investment and create more opportunities for Nigerians to work for international companies without leaving the country.
According to the State House, the President has ordered the development of a roadmap for the initiative, which is expected to make it easier for Nigerian technology and service companies to access global capital, operate for international markets and retain their businesses and intellectual property within Nigeria.
The initiative is also expected to support the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy by creating opportunities across areas including software development, engineering, design, legal services, accounting and other professional services required by technology-driven businesses.
The presidency said the policy is aimed at positioning Nigeria as a destination for global digital businesses while expanding employment opportunities for young Nigerians. Tinubu said Nigeria has the talent and entrepreneurial capacity to build companies capable of competing internationally, adding that the government’s role is to create an environment that allows businesses and professionals to participate in the global economy from within Nigeria.
The move comes as Nigeria continues efforts to expand its technology sector and attract investment into digital services. The government says the Digital Free Zones could help Nigerian companies operate more competitively in international markets while generating jobs and investment domestically.
The next stage will focus on translating the policy into an operational framework and establishing the conditions required for businesses to participate in the digital free-zone ecosystem.
