Cooking Gas Supply Crunch Hits Nigeria as Demand Falls by Nearly 23%

Nigeria’s cooking gas market is facing a supply squeeze linked to disruptions in international energy markets, with demand for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) reportedly falling by nearly 23 per cent.

The development is being linked partly to disruptions arising from the ongoing Iran war, which have affected global energy supply chains and increased pressure on fuel and gas markets.

According to a report by Punch, the supply challenges are being felt in Nigeria as import-related difficulties and lower domestic production affect the availability of cooking gas.

Cooking gas has become an increasingly important household energy source in Nigeria, particularly as consumers look for alternatives to firewood, kerosene and other traditional fuels. However, the latest supply constraints could place additional pressure on households and businesses that depend on LPG for cooking.

Import dependence remains an important factor in Nigeria’s LPG market. When international supply is disrupted or the cost of bringing products into the country increases, local prices and availability can be affected.

The current situation also highlights the exposure of Nigeria’s domestic energy market to developments in the international market. Global disruptions can influence shipping costs, product availability and the overall cost of importing petroleum products into the country.

For households, any prolonged reduction in LPG supply could translate into higher costs or increased difficulty accessing cooking gas, particularly in areas where distribution networks are already under pressure.

Industry stakeholders will be watching supply levels closely as international energy-market disruptions continue. The situation also adds to ongoing discussions about increasing domestic gas production and infrastructure so Nigeria can rely less heavily on imported energy products.

The latest development comes amid broader volatility in Nigeria’s energy sector, with international oil and gas-market movements continuing to affect domestic fuel prices and supply conditions.
