King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending the throne at the age of three, has been laid to rest amid a bitter dispute over his successor. The 34-year-old monarch died on August 27, 2026, while receiving cancer treatment in the United States. His funeral took place on Saturday, September 12, at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal, western Uganda, following a nine-day mourning period that attracted thousands of mourners and dignitaries.The late king’s death has triggered tensions within the royal family over who should inherit the throne. While the Babiito royal clan selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a news anchor with Uganda’s public broadcaster, as the next monarch, King Oyo’s sister, Princess Ruth Komuntale, and their mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, have challenged the decision. Princess Ruth reportedly produced a 2022 will which she said named the late king’s biological son as heir. However, the identity and legitimacy of the alleged heir remain disputed, with members of the royal clan saying they were unaware of his existence.Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has appealed to the people of Tooro to resolve the succession dispute peacefully and prioritise unity. During the burial ceremony, the newly selected successor, Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, reportedly performed a traditional ritual involving nine coffee berries, marking the formal transfer of authority. King Oyo, who reigned for 31 years, was remembered for his contributions to youth empowerment, education, healthcare and HIV/AIDS awareness. Although Uganda’s traditional monarchs have no constitutional political authority, the Tooro Kingdom remains an important cultural institution with influence over millions of people.
