An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Bukar Kashim Goni, has denied any involvement in an alleged coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that over ₦10 million traced to his account was strictly for prayers and charitable purposes. He is among six defendants currently standing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged conspiracy. 
During court proceedings, video evidence was presented showing the cleric being questioned by investigators over multiple financial transactions allegedly linked to a key suspect, identified as a military officer. In his defence, Goni maintained that his relationship with the officer was purely religious, explaining that he was approached for spiritual support over personal challenges, including delayed promotions. 
Despite the explanations, investigators challenged his claims, pointing to financial records that allegedly showed large transfers, including ₦10 million, and conversations suggesting broader intentions beyond prayers. However, the cleric firmly denied any knowledge of a coup plan, stating he had no involvement in political or military activities and only provided religious services. 
The case is part of a wider trial involving multiple suspects accused of treason, terrorism-related offences, and failure to report a planned attack on the government. All defendants have pleaded not guilty, with the court set to continue hearings as more evidence is reviewed in the coming days.
