The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has pledged its full support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in strengthening the credibility of future elections through enhanced digital identity verification. The commitment was made by NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote during a courtesy visit to the INEC headquarters in Abuja, where both agencies reaffirmed plans to deepen collaboration following the enactment of the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) said closer cooperation between the two agencies would improve voter identity verification, eliminate duplicate voter records, reduce electoral fraud and support the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections. He noted that INEC’s online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) platform already requires applicants to provide their National Identification Number (NIN), adding that stronger integration with NIMC would further enhance the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
Coker-Odusote described the new NIMC Act as a landmark reform that transforms the commission into Nigeria’s foundational digital identity authority, providing the infrastructure for secure digital governance and trusted identity verification. She said the reforms would help reduce fraud, improve access to public services and reinforce confidence in elections, stressing that “NIMC is ready to support INEC in delivering free, fair and transparent elections because identity remains the foundation of effective governance and credible electoral processes.”
