Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has faced criticism on social media after sharing a birthday message on Monday, August 24, the same day veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, was buried in Ilaro, Ogun State. Some users described the post as insensitive, arguing that Akindele should have shown greater restraint while the Yoruba film industry mourned the veteran actor.
Critics noted that Ogogo died only a day earlier at the age of 66 and was being laid to rest on the day Akindele celebrated her birthday. Some social media users argued that, given Akindele’s prominence in Nollywood, she could have postponed public birthday celebrations out of respect for the deceased and his colleagues.
However, other users defended the actress, arguing that her birthday and Ogogo’s burial were unrelated events and that she had every right to celebrate her special day. The reactions have therefore remained divided, with the controversy centred largely on whether her birthday post was inappropriate or simply coincidental.
